Anambra Flood: NEMA, DRU Start Search, Rescue Operations

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Disaster Response Unit (DRU) of the military have commenced aerial view of flooded areas in Anambra to ascertain persons who were displaced or trapped by the rising flood.

The South East Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Mr. Thickman Tanimu, disclosed this in Awka, yesterday, adding that the exercise would aid in airlifting of trapped persons in the affected communities.

He said: “Search and Rescue (SAR) operations have commenced today. The military DRU has engaged and started ‘Air Recce’ or aerial view to collect imagery intelligence of affected communities.

“This will help to ascertain displaced and trapped persons, who need to be evacuated, to pave way for airlifting.

“The relief materials would be presented directly to Anambra flood victims today.

“The delay in arrival of relief materials is due to the flood disaster that cut off Abuja – Lokoja road, as well as the security situation due to Monday sit-at-home in the South East.”

“The relief materials will hopefully arrived today and be ready for delivery directly to victims.

“These items are meant to complement efforts of Anambra State government in providing immediate succour to victims and aid their speedy rehabilitation.”

Meanwhile, the immediate past governor of the state, Chief Willie Obiano, has expressed his condolences to the governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, over the tragic death of 85 persons in Ogbaru Council of the state in boat mishap.

In a condolence message, made available, yesterday, in Awka, to newsmen through his media aide, Tony Nezianya, Obiano said: ‘’I sympathize with the state government and families of victims of the accident.

“This incident has added to the ugly situation, following huge deadly flooding that has displaced people from their homes, washing away houses and farmlands.”
