ASUU strike unlawful, demands handled- Ngige

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU one-month)’s warning strike has been deemed illegal by Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige, who claims the union’s demands are already being handled. 

Ngige made the announcement during a press conference in his office on Tuesday, following a protracted conciliation meeting between the government and ASUU.

On Wednesday, ministry spokesperson Charles Akpan released a statement to that effect.  

‘Ngige denounced the continuing strike by university professors as an obvious violation of the law, adding that the union did not go through the appropriate process before beginning on the industrial action,’ according to the statement. 

‘According to him, prior to the strike, ASUU did not provide the Federal Government with the required 14-day strike notice as required by law.’ 

‘I saw their letter in my office on February 18, which was last Friday, and as you know, they started their action on Monday, February 14. As a result, it is an obvious violation of labour regulations. There are several infractions. ,’ the minister said in the statement.

‘If you must give us notice of an impending strike, you must do so at least 14 days in advance. I reminded them that we live in a country governed by laws. Nobody is exempt from the law. They must follow it.’ 

According to Ngige, the Trade Disputes Act allows him to arrest the strike and, once done, the strike should terminate. 

He said the union’s 5-point requests were examined and touched on at Tuesday’s meeting, and four of them were sorted out with dates for implementation.
