The Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Institutions (CVCNU) has condemned the admission of students to universities without permission.
Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, the CVCNU’s Secretary-General, said this during a news conference in Abuja on Thursday following the conclusion of the organization’s 80th meeting.
According to Ochefu, the committee has decided to meet with JAMB officials to call attention to the illicit admissions and provide remedies to the problem.
Concerns about the ASUU strike were conveyed by members of the committee, according to the secretary general.
He stated that the federal government must be proactive and engage in talks with the union in order to reach an equitable settlement to the crisis.
“At the core of the issue is financing for public colleges, which members claim is severely inadequate by the federal and state governments”.
“The Meeting emphasized that if the lingering concerns are not immediately resolved, Public Universities may not be able to endure the effects of another extended strike by the union,” he stated.
Concerning professional bodies, Ochefu stated that the committee decided to organize a thorough stakeholders’ conference to settle university accreditation and verification programs.
“The Committee identified certain areas of contention in professional bodies’ roles and actions in resource verification and certification of academic programs in Nigerian universities”.
“While the statutes that establish universities allow its Senate the authority to oversee academic procedures, numerous professional associations insist on regulating the curriculum and training of students in particular professions, claiming their own regulations.”
“The meeting decided that a complete stakeholder meeting on this issue was required since things were getting out of hand.”
