Common Symptoms of Bed Sore as Per Experts

Bed sore, also known as pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers, is a skin and tissue injuries that occur due to prolonged pressure on the skin, particularly in bony areas. They are a common problem for people who are bedridden, wheelchair-bound or have limited mobility.

In this article, we will discuss the common symptoms of bed sores as per experts.

  1. Redness or Discoloration: The earliest sign of a developing bed sore is skin redness or discoloration in the affected area. The color may range from bright red to purplish, depending on the severity of the injury. The discoloration may not disappear when pressure is removed from the area and can be an indication of skin damage.
  2. Pain or Sensitivity: As the bed sore progresses, the affected area may become painful or sensitive to touch. This can also make it difficult for the patient to move or change positions, which can worsen the condition.
  3. Swelling may also be present in the affected area, particularly if the bed sore is located near a joint. This can make it even more difficult for the patient to move or change positions, and can further increase the risk of skin damage.
  4. Warmth or Coolness: The skin in the affected area may feel warm to the touch, indicating inflammation and tissue damage. In some cases, the skin may feel cool or cold, which can be a sign of poor circulation and advanced tissue damage.
  5. Blisters or Pus : As the bed sore progresses, blisters or pus-filled sores may develop in the affected area. These are signs of a more severe injury and can increase the risk of infection. It is important to seek medical attention if blisters or pus are present.
  6. Odor : A strong, unpleasant odor may be present in the affected area, particularly if an infection is present. This can be a sign that the bed sore has reached an advanced stage and requires urgent medical attention.
  7. Dead Tissue: As the bed sore progresses, dead tissue may be present in the affected area. This is known as necrosis and can increase the risk of infection and further tissue damage. Dead tissue may appear black or gray, and it is important to seek medical attention if it is present.
