After the Super Eagles were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, Austin Eguavoen stepped down as temporary coach.

Following a flawless group stage performance, the squad was unable to overcome a conflicted Tunisia side, therefore ending Eguavoen’s chances of retaining the post on a permanent basis.

Even though the Nigeria Football Federation has hired Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, there were indications that Eguavoen could have remained in his position if he led Nigeria to its fourth AFCON championship. Youssef Msakni put an end to any optimism in the 47th minute.

Eguavoen announced his decision to return to his duties as the NFF’s Technical Director at a post-match news conference.

“What happens next is that I will return to my post as interim coach and Technical Director of the NFF and let the Federation to make a decision on the way forward.” Eguavoen remarked.

The focus will now shift to the World Cup play-offs against Ghana, which are scheduled for March.
