The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Gombe chapter has announced the expansion of its electoral polling units with an additional 770 units across the state.

The REC, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, stated during stakeholders meeting; that new settlements within the state are among the areas that would mostly benefit from the creation of the new units which were last created over 25 years ago.

The meeting was on the expansion of voters’ access to polling units held at the Conference Hall of the Federal Secretariat, Gombe.

He noted the expansion became a necessity following the ensuing challenging embarrassment which included congestion at polling units due to growth in population, long distance between polling units which affects voter turnout among other reasons during elections.

“It is worthy to note that the current polling unit structure used by the commission was created since 1996, which is almost three decades now” he said.

He further explained that the new development would help curb some of the embarrassing challenges.
