India tops Nigeria as world’s poorest country

India has surpassed Nigeria in terms of the number of people living in extreme poverty against the 2018 ranking.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic’s economic impact, the World Poverty Clock, WPC, stated this in a recent update.

The World Poverty Clock is an online application that tracks global and regional progress against poverty and offers real-time poverty data for countries.

Extremely poor individuals, according to its data, are those who live on less than N800 per day (less than $2 per day).

Nigeria topped the list in 2018, with 87 million people living in severe poverty, compared to 73 million in India.

In the latest estimates, around 83 million Indians would be living in severe poverty by 2022, accounting for 6% of the country’s 1.3 billion people.

The World Poverty Center says 70 million people in Nigeria live in severe poverty, accounting for 33% of the country’s population of over 200 million.
