Nigeria: Buhari assures ASUU that FG will work as promised

The president of Nigeria, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari began the week by promising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that the Federal Government will keep its promises.

This, according to the President, was done to avoid disruptive strikes, ensure ongoing academic programs, and boost education budgets.

The President made the vow on Feb. 1 when he received members of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC), led by the Co-Chairs, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto, and Rev. Samson Ayokunle, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria.

On Friday, ASUU raised worries about the Federal Government’s ability to settle the persisting crisis in the education sector, particularly at universities, and threatened to go on indefinite strike.

The President, on the other hand, argued that no society that intended to be successful would ignore its educational system and all of its components.

As a result, he praised NIREC’s leadership for intervening in ASUU’s year-long strike and having talks with the parties.

On Monday, Buhari hosted a dinner at the State House in Abuja for the 2022 Committee of Business, Political, Media, and Civil Society Leaders.

At the event, the president pledged his commitment to hand over a strong repositioned agriculture-led, diversified home-grown economy, stable democracy and revamped armed and security forces to the next administration.
