Nigeria to be highest producer of plastic waste in 2025-UNIDO

Nigeria would be the top producer of mismanaged plastic trash in 2025, according to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Mr. Oluyomi Banjo, an environment expert with the UNIDO Regional Office in Nigeria, made the claim during a presentation at an event where the governments of Nigeria and Japan, as well as UNIDO, signed an agreement to promote a sustainable plastic value chain in Nigeria through circular economy practices.

Nigeria’s consumption increased from 578,000 to 1,250,000 metric tons, according to Banjo, while per capita consumption increased from 4 to 6.5 kilograms, with each inhabitant eating 7.5 kilograms.

According to him, this statistic amounts for 13% of total solid trash, and Nigeria is the 9th country with a coastline that generates unmanaged plastic waste.

Nigeria, he claimed, will be Africa’s top producer of poorly handled plastic garbage by 2025.

He claims that 322 metric tonnes are produced globally, which is anticipated to double by 2035 and quadruple by 2050 if no action is taken.

“Plastics account for 12% of total solid trash created, yet only 14% is collected, and just 9% is recycled,” he stated.
