Obiano asks lawmakers to back Soludo as he becomes governor

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has encouraged members of the House of Assembly to offer governor-elect Charles Soludo the same legislative backing that he received.

Obiano made the request at a State Assembly valedictory session conducted in his honor in Awka on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Soludo, a professor and former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), will be sworn in as the state’s sixth executive governor.

Obiano lauded the legislature’s and his outgoing administration’s solid working relationship.

“I appreciate the House for honouring me and for your kind words. It is always difficult to say goodbyes, but I will remember you, the sixth and the seventh Assembly, for your support”.

“I want to appeal, accord the incoming governor the same legislative support and assistance you accorded me,” he said.

The legislators took turns praising and congratulating Obiano on his excellent achievements.

Uche Okafor, the Speaker of the State Assembly, hailed Obiano as a visionary leader who left the state with respectable legacy projects.

Okafor praised the government’s legislative and executive branches for working together.

“You will be remembered for your achievements and legacy projects such as the passenger and cargo airport, the international convention centre, the township stadium and other projects.

“As you bow out on Thursday, on behalf of the 7th Assembly, we congratulate you for finishing strong,” the Speaker said.

According to the Report, Soludo won the gubernatorial election in Anambra State by defeating Valentine Ozigbo and Andy Uba, his closest challengers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), with 112,229 votes, or 45 percent of the total votes cast.

Ozigbo received 53,807 votes, followed by Uba with 43,285 votes, with the remaining 32,202 votes going to the 15 other political parties who ran in the Anambra gubernatorial election.

Soludo pledged to bring the dividends of democracy to the people of Anambra State in his victory speech after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) pronounced him the winner of the election.
