President Muhammadu Buhari has joined Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-cultural and political organization, in mourning the death of Pa Ayorinde Fasanmi, characterizing his death as a great loss to the nation.
Buhari expressed his condolences to the people of Osun and Ekiti, as well as family members, friends, and colleagues of the elder statesman, in a statement delivered in Abuja on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina.
He admitted that Pa Fasanmi had served in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, where he had made a political name for himself.
The president stated that the older statesman always stood for the truth, especially when it came to matters concerning the elevation of the oppressed.
Buhari stated that Fasanmi’s excellent counsel derived from humility, profound contemplation, laborious research, and experience will be severely missed by administrations at all levels.
The late elder statesman, according to the president, often and readily listened to leaders and always had valuable advice on the way forward.
As an enthusiastic disciple and prodigy of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the bold and steadfast Afenifere leader, lived to serve his people and the nation, according to Buhari.
He claimed that the progressive values espoused by late Pa Fasanmi had a significant influence and offered a road map for development at the state and federal levels.
“The contributions of Fasanmi in the foundation and sustaining of Nigeria’s democracy will be remembered, and posterity will be grateful for his immense sacrifices,” Buhari said.
The president prayed that the Almighty God would accept the departed leader’s soul and comfort his family.
PA Fasanmi died on July 22 in Osogbo, Osun, according to a statement issued by one of his children, Folabi Fasanmi, who stated the nonagenarian died quietly.
