SSANU, NASU extend strike by two months

The current strike has been prolonged by two months by the joint action committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU). 

On Wednesday, the unions released a joint statement signed by Peter Adeyemi, the general secretary, and Mohammed Ibrahim, the national president of SSANU.  

The government hasn’t responded to the bulk of the unions’ demands, the statement claims, which is why the industrial action was extended.  

It also stated that the strike’s two-month extension will begin on Friday.  

‘‘In view of the fact that government is still a long way from effectively resolving the issues in contention, it is only expedient that we allow the process to fully conclude before directing the end of the strike,” the statement reads.

“Consequently, you are hereby informed that the strike is extended by two months, within which we are hoping that all the contentious issues will effectively rest. The two-month extension is with effect from Friday, June 24, 2022”. 

SSANU and NASU had on March 27 declared a two-week warning strike. 

By April 10, the unions extended the strike by another two weeks, citing the government’s failure to meet their demands. 

The development also comes amid the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). 

ASUU had on February 14 declared a one-month warning strike to protest the non-implementation of its demands by the federal government. 

But on March 14, the union extended the industrial action by eight weeks, citing the government’s failure to fully address its demands. 

The union thereafter extended the strike by another 12 weeks.
