Thirty-five secondary schools in Rivers State have been barred from presenting students for the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination, or WASSCE, as a result of their involvement in examination malpractices.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is an examination board established by law to determine the examinations required in the public interest in the English-speaking West African countries, to conduct examinations and award certificates comparable to those of equivalent examining authorities.
The letter de-recognizing the affected institutions, written by the Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator for Head of National Office of West African Examinations Council, WAEC, S.D. KUM, has been forwarded to all concerned schools and for public notice by the State Ministry of Education.
He said that until further notice, the schools affected by the prohibition will not register applicants for the exam.
Some institutions have earned the moniker “miracle centers,” where all kinds of examination malpractices are tolerated and desperate students and their parents register to obtain forged results.
Christ Secondary School, Nonwa, Rootway Comprehensive College, PH, Millenium High School, PH, Excel Comprehensive College, Bori, Sonny Memorial College, Diobu, and Khana Comprehensive High School are just a few of the schools.
Community Secondary School, Baen Comm. Sec. Sch. Ebubu Eleme, John Wesley College, Bori, Ngo-Uyeada, Baptist Vocational College, Ahoada.
The schools’ closure might be the result of the WAEC surveillance team’s attentiveness and the outcome of the 2021 performance in the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination.
