World No Tobacco Day 2023: We Need Food, Not Tobacco

Every year on 31st May, World No Tobacco Day is organized by World Health Organization to promote awareness about the risk related to the consumption of tobacco and its product and its ill effect on the family, society, and environment.

Tobacco use and its consumption are one of the leading causes of many types of cancer, like lungs, larynx mouth, esophagus, throat, bladder, kidney, liver, stomach, pancreas, colon, and cervix, as well as acute myeloid leukemia.

It is estimated that over 10 million people die every year due to the consumption of tobacco.

Tobacco not only affects the health of individuals but also impacts the environment badly in terrible ways.

Theme

The Theme for this year, 2023 is “WE NEED FOOD, NOT TOBACCO”.

The theme intends to get tobacco producers to adopt sustainable and nutritious crops by providing awareness concerning marketing options and production alternatives. In addition, the theme focuses on exposing the efforts of the tobacco industry’s sabotage initiatives by replacing tobacco with sustainable crops.

How Smoking and Tobacco Consumption Impacts the Health

Tobacco consumption and smoking affects our health in number of ways, it could be reason for the following fatal diseases:

  1. Cancer of digestive system like GERD, Achalasia Cardia (pancreas, stomach, mouth, liver, rectum, colon, and esophagus)
  2. Neurovascular complications and neurological disorders along with other neuro related disease like stroke, Small Vessel Ischemic Disease of the Brain (SVID) and vascular dementia
  3. Heart disease
  4. Lung diseases
  5. Diabetes
  6. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  7. Tuberculosis
  8. Certain eye diseases

Tips to Abstain from Smoking

The following factors can aid in smoking cessation:

  1. Using nicotine replacement therapy
  2. Avoiding triggering areas such as bars
  3. Chewing sugarless gum or hard candy to resist tobacco cravings
  4. Distracting oneself and moving to a smoke-free zone to overcome a tobacco craving
  5. Daily exercise
  6. Trying alternate relaxation techniques to reduce stress, such as deep breathing, muscle relaxation, yoga, and music
