World Water Day commemorates water and promotes awareness of the 2.2 billion people who do not have access to safe drinking water.

It is about taking action to address the world’s water issue. One of the primary goals of World Water Day is to help achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Brief History of the Day

The idea for this global day originated in 1992 when Rio de Janeiro held the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.

The United Nations General Assembly issued a resolution the same year proclaiming March 22nd as World Day for Water, to be observed annually beginning in 1993.

Other celebrations and events are included. For example, the current International Decade for Water for Sustainable Development, which spans from 2018 to 2028, and the 2013 International Year of Cooperation in the Water Sphere.

These commemorations seek to underline the critical role of water and sanitation policy in alleviating poverty, supporting economic progress, and maintaining environmental sustainability.

The year 2022 theme of World Water Day

As an intangible resource with global implications, groundwater was the emphasis in 2022.

Groundwater is water found underground in aquifers, andare geological formations made up of rocks, sands, and gravels that may retain massive amounts of water.

Groundwater flows into the seas and nourishes springs, rivers, lakes, and marshes. Rain and snowfall penetrating the soil are the primary sources of groundwater recharge. Pumps and wells can bring groundwater to the surface.

Life would be impossible without groundwater; Groundwater is the only source of water for the vast majority of the world’s arid regions.

Groundwater provides a significant portion of the water we use for drinking, sanitation, food production, and industrial operations.

It is also necessary for the correct functioning of ecosystems like as wetlands and rivers. We must protect them against overexploitation – taking more water than is replaced by rain and snow – and the pollution that currently plagues them, since this results in resource depletion, increased processing costs, and sometimes, the incapacity to use it.

Exploring, maintaining, and using groundwater in a sustainable manner will be crucial to surviving and adapting to climate change, as well as meeting the needs of a growing population.
