Nigeria Arrests Super Cop, 4 Others Over Drug trafficking

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Mr Echeng Echeng, has ordered a total suspension of all toll collections in the Anambra with immediate effect.

The Nigerian Police Force apprehended five of its colleagues on Monday, including the country’s super cop for their roles in drug cartel operations and facilitating drug trafficking in the country.

Abba Kyari, the Super cop and Commander of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) at the Nigerian Police Force’s Force Intelligence Bureau, was among those seized, according to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

“Unfortunately, certain law enforcement personnel who should be partners in pursuing the President’s mission are at the forefront of breaching the law, as they help and abet drug trafficking in the country,” stated an Anti-Narcotics Agency spokeswoman. “Based on the evidence we have, the Agency thinks DCP Kyari is a part of a criminal gang that operates the Brazil-Ethiopia-Nigeria illicit drug pipeline.”

Nigeria is dealing with a widespread drug issue. According to January 2021 academic research, the extent of drug addiction has had a severe influence among students and youngsters who have resorted to using cocaine, heroin, and cough syrup.

Despite legislation and efforts aimed at reducing ease of access, drug misuse is at an all-time high. “In barely a year, even the most cynical Nigerians have agreed that the country is indeed in a drug quagmire, and hence appreciate the continuous efforts of NDLEA operatives,” stated an NDLEA spokeswoman.

Kyari was suspended last year after the US Attorney’s Office brought charges against him in July 2021. According to the affidavit filed by US officials, Kyari was arrested at the behest of an Instagram influencer and convicted of money launderer in return for cash. According to reports, a US court has issued an arrest order for him, and Nigerian officials have initiated an internal inquiry.
