Buhari will sign electoral bill on Friday – Presidency source

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to sign the long-awaited Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 on Friday, according to reports.

According to a White House source, the President will sign the bill around 12:00 p.m, barring any last-minute revisions.

Anxiety has grown as a result of Buhari’s refusal to sign the re-amended law. Some members of the public and key stakeholders had already determined that he would refuse to provide his consent once more.

On January 31, the National Assembly forwarded the bill to Buhari for the second time. The President, on the other hand, put it off for more than 20 days.

He has a 30-day window to consent or declare his reasons for not doing so, according to the Constitution.

“All these worries will vanish by Friday afternoon, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Around noon on that day, he will sign the law. I believe he has taken his time in order for the Act to be as impregnable as feasible.” added the insider.

Buhari had refused to sign the law in November 2021, claiming the expense of holding direct primary elections, security concerns, and the possibility of political actors manipulating voting procedures as grounds for his decision.

Following that, he imposed several restrictions, causing lawmakers to revise the bill.
