This Commission consists of a Chairman and twelve National Commissioners.
INEC as a commission was constituted in compliance with Section 153(f) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Constitution.
The functions of the Commission, as specified in Part I of the Third Schedule to the 1999 Constitution, are as follows:
INEC’s objective is to act as an independent and effective EMB devoted to conducting free, fair, and credible elections in order to ensure Nigeria’s long-term democracy.
INEC’s aim is to be one of the world’s greatest Election Management Bodies (EMB) that satisfies the ambitions of the Nigerian people.
INEC’s discharge of its duties follow these values:
Autonomy: INEC must perform all of its tasks autonomously, free of external control and interference.
Transparency: INEC must be open and transparent in all of its activities and interactions with all stakeholders.
Integrity: INEC must be truthful and honest in all of its interactions at all times.
Credibility: INEC shall ensure that no action or activity is taken in support of any candidate or political party.
Impartiality: INEC shall ensure the creation of a level playing field for all political actors.
Dedication: INEC shall be committed to providing quality electoral services efficiently and effectively, guided by best international practice and standards.
Equity: INEC shall ensure fairness and justice in dealing with all stakeholders.
Excellence: INEC shall be committed to the promotion of merit and professionalism as the basis for all its actions.
Team work: INEC shall create a conducive environment that promotes teamwork among its staff at all levels.
Carry out such other functions as may be conferred upon it by an Act of the National Assembly.
