History

The Party for Social Democracy was founded in 2002. Following the 2003 general election, its name was formally changed to the Labour Party. Olusegun Mimiko served as governor of Ondo State for two terms (2009-2017) under the banner of the Labour Party, only to return to the PDP in 2021.

2021

After the death of the late National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, in 2020, the party faced a significant leadership problem. Barrister Julius Abure, the Labour Party’s National Secretary, was chosen as the party’s next National Chairman by the National Executive Council (NEC) in 2021.

Calistus Okafor, the former Deputy National Chairman of the party, challenged Barrister Julius Abure when he claimed to be the genuine National Chairman of the party by virtue of his position.

2022

Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi joined the party after quitting the People’s Democratic Party owing to concerns with the party that was inconsistent with his image and values. He emerged as the party’s 2023 presidential candidate when Pat Utomi, Faduri Joseph, and Olubusola Emmanuel-Tella dropped out, leaving him as the lone contestant in the presidential primary. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour was elected as the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos state.
