An officer of the Anambra Traffic Management Agency (ATMA) was shot by unidentified attackers in Awka on Tuesday.

In a statement, DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, verified the event and identified the victim as Mr. Chinedu Onwuka.

The hoodlums were spotted on the Ekwulobia-Umunze route, where they attempted to disarm a squad of police officers but were vigorously repelled with superior weapons, according to Tochukwu.

According to him, the shooters fired irregularly in an attempt to flee, and one of their bullets struck the traffic officer, killing him instantly.

According to him, the state police command began an intense patrol throughout the state today with the goal of apprehending suspected hoodlums on Ekwulobia-Umunze route.

“Among others, the Patrol team consists of Mobile Police Operatives, a counter-terrorism squad, special forces, and regular police personnel”.

“Preliminary evidence indicates that the hoodlums began firing irregularly in an effort to disarm a mobile police officer on patrol”.

“The Mobile Police Officers promptly returned fire, engaging the hoodlums, forcing the attackers to escape the area.”

“The hoodlums fled the scene while firing intermittently and arrived at Nkwo Umuchu Junction, where one Mr Chinedu Onwuka, 30-years-old, of the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency, Aguata Unit, was injured by a bullet,” he claimed.
