Health benefits of some Traditional Nigerian snacks

We may have abandoned several traditional Nigerian snacks for processed and refined biscuits, cookies, and cakes; thus forgetting that some of the local snacks possess huge health benefits.  

Here are some healthy Nigeria snacks we overlook

Cashew nuts: Cashews nuts are rich in protein and other nutrients and can offer some health benefits. They can help boost bone strength and heart health.

The monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids found in cashews can help decrease LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

The acids reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and heart attack.  

Boli: Boli is a roasted plantain dish in Nigeria. It is native to the Yoruba people of Nigeria.

They are diuretics and can help prevent kidney and bladder problems. They also ease the discomfort associated with the menstrual period.

Boli is strongly recommended for people who are concerned about their weight and want to maintain a healthy weight.  

Coconut: Rich in fibre and MCTs, it offers several benefits, including improved heart health, weight loss, and digestion. Yet, it’s high in calories and saturated fat, so you should eat it in moderation. It gives you better oral health.  

Tiger nuts: Tiger nuts are rich in heart-healthy fats. They improve vein and artery flexibility and blood circulation, which reduces the risk of heart disease.

It treats erectile dysfunction, fights bacterial infections, regulates blood pressure, and aids digestion. 

Peanuts (Groundnuts): people who regularly eat groundnuts are far less likely to die of heart stroke or disease.

Peanuts and other nuts can also lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels. Boosts Memory and Promotes Fertility.

Kulikuli: Kuli-kuli refers to a West African snack primarily made from peanuts.

Rich in fibre and helps reduce weight or prevent weight gain. Kulikuli is rich in iron, helps boost red blood cells and helps treat anaemia.  

Donkwa: Tanfiri, also known as Donkwa (dodonkwa), is a savoury Nigerian snack made with cornmeal and groundnuts (peanuts).

Donkwa is one of those snacks that does not require cooking. If you’re trying to slim down a bit, eating Donkwa helps you lose weight proportionately.

Its health benefits include Fertility boosting, Helps Fight Depression, Boosts Your Memory, Regulates Blood Sugar. It also lowers the risk of cancer.   

Kokoro: Kokoro is a common snack in Nigeria. Made from a paste of maize flour, Kokoro is mixed with sugar and gari or yam flour which is then deep-fried into a snack.  

Akara: Akara is made of beans that are high in fibre and antioxidants. Beans aren’t just good for the waistline, they may aid in disease prevention.

Akara is a traditional Nigerian dinner that helps reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke. It also helps to prevent cancer.
