Nestle to supply 39.5 million bottles of baby formula to United States

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Monday that Nestle, a Swiss food manufacturer, will make 39.5 million more bottles of baby formula accessible in the United States to help alleviate a statewide shortage.

Nestle will supply Gerber Good Start Gentle formula from Mexico and NAN Supreme Pro 1 and Supreme Pro 2 from Germany starting in June and ending in October, according to the FDA’s improved flexibility.

From July to October, about 1.3 million cans of Gerber Good Start Gentle will be sold in the United States.

This amounted to approximately 33 million full-size 8-ounce bottles or 2.2 million pounds.

Both sets of products are expected to be sold on Gerber.com and through other key retailers and online.

The agency now said the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services was evaluating options for getting the products to the U.S. as quickly as possible.

Nestle had in May air freighted Gerber Good Start Extensive HA from the Netherlands and Alfamino from Switzerland to the U.S.

Nestle then said these products were prioritised as they serve a critical medical purpose intended for babies with cow milk protein allergies.

The company said then that it was running formula factories at capacity and accelerated product availability to retailers, online sellers and hospitals.

In February, the US faced a shortage of newborn formula after Abbott Nutrition, the country’s largest infant formula maker, shuttered its Sturgis, Michigan factory and recalled its most popular powder varieties.

After reports of bacterial illnesses and fatalities in newborns, Abbott Nutrition recalled its Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare products.

The FDA later asked baby formula makers all over the world to bring goods to the United States in order to satisfy the serious supply deficit

Kendal Nutricare, a British nutrition products company, has committed to deliver around two million cans of baby formula under the Kendamil brand to the United States starting in June. The White House recently said the flights donated by United Airlines will airlift more than eight million bottles of baby food from Bubs Australia infant formulas from Melbourne, Australia as well as Kendamil products from the United Kingdom.

Earlier, a U.S. military plane carrying 78,000 pounds of baby formula reached Indianapolis from Germany.
