According to Nigeria’s public health service, one person has died from monkeypox, with 21 viral cases reported thus far.
“The fatality recorded in a 40-year-old patient who had underlying co-morbidity and was on immunosuppressive drugs,” the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said in a statement on Sunday.
According to the report, verified cases have recorded from nine states as well as the federal capital area.
“There has been no indication of any novel or atypical transmission of the virus, nor changes in its clinical presentation described (including symptoms, profile, and virulence) among the 21 cases reported so far in 2022,” it stated.
Symptoms of the zoonotic illness include a rash on the face, palms, soles of the feet, genitals, and other regions of the body, as well as a rapid fever, headache, bodily discomfort, weakness, and sore throat.
Patients be kept in isolation for the length of the illness, which can last up to three weeks.
Nearly 200 cases of monkeypox have documented in more than 20 countries, according to the World Health Organization. The pandemic is “containable,” according to a top health official, and mass immunizations are unnecessary.
