A rise in polio cases has been observed in Nigeria, according to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. In the week ending December 28, 2021, 64 polio cases were reported in the Nigerian states of Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Kwara, FCT, Niger, Ekiti, and Lagos.
“Polio is a dangerous infection caused by the poliovirus, The virus dwells in the throat and intestines of an infected individual. It enters the body through the mouth and spreads through contact with an infected person’s poo, droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneeze, touching your mouth with poo on your hands, putting objects in your mouth that are contaminated with infected poo, and consuming food and water that has been contaminated with an infected person’s poo”.
Travellers should get polio immunizations, according to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
“Vaccines exist to protect you from polio. If you are traveling to Nigeria, you should practice good hand hygiene and take food and drink precautions to lower your chance of contracting polio. If it has been more than 10 years since your last booster, consider getting a polio vaccination booster.”
