Prof Chukwuma Soludo, the newly elected governor of Anambra State, has pledged to put a stop to gasoline tanker accidents in the state.

Soludo, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), made this pledge in response to Friday’s fuel tanker fire in Onitsha, which destroyed assets worth billions of dollars.

He expressed great grief over the amount of the victims’ material losses, bemoaning the on-going tanker explosions in the Onitsha axis and other places around the country.

“Soludo guaranteed that a long-term solution to prevent such incidents must be devised to save valuable lives and monetary losses in the future, noting that the current trend cannot continue,” he stated.

He, however, commended President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Willie Obiano for their immediate reactions and condolences to the victims.

“He equally called on relevant government institutions saddled with the responsibilities of providing succour for cases of this nature to provide the needed relief and support to ameliorate the losses, pains and agonies suffered by the victims arising from the unfortunate incident.”

He also commended the gallantry of the youths, fire service officials and other security personnel who came immediately to the scene to stem the spread of the inferno.
