President Muhammadu Buhari cautioned on Thursday that if his party, the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), fails to clean up its act, the opposition might win power in 2023.

During an exclusive interview with Nigerian Television Authority, the president mentioned this in response to a question.

When asked if the APC can manage its various issues ahead of its national convention, President Obama said the party should learn from the PDP’s destiny in the 2015 general election.

According to him, the incumbent party at the time, the PDP, was so arrogant that it never dreamed opposition groups could unify and fight the presidential election.

He went on to say that it was too late for the PDP to realize its error by the time the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) amalgamated.

“Well, we have a deadline.” We must labor because the four-year cycle is constitutional, and no one can tamper with it. So, if the ruling party is unable to reach an agreement, the opposition can seize over.

“How did the PDP respond? They believed that the opposition would not be able to get together and agree. They were off when the ACN, ANPP, CPC, and APGA got together. They’re still turned off. As a result, people can see it,” he explained.

The President further stated that no one suspected of corruption will be exempt from prosecution even if they join his party.

Many observers have noted that some opposition politicians who have been accused of corruption want to join the ruling party in order to avoid prosecution.

President Buhari, on the other hand, stated that joining the APC does not exonerate someone accused of corruption.

President Buhari further stated that he has given Nigeria his all and that he wants folks to recognize this once he leaves office.

“What I expect Nigerians to say is that this man has done his best,” the Nigerian leader continued.
